So you wanna know how to start an online business with NO money?!

Well, you’re in the right place. I’ve been working with 6 and 7 figure online businesses for about a decade, before online businesses and the creator economy and making money online was really even a thing. I’m actually kind of obsessed with the fact that it’s now possible for pretty much ANYONE to start an online business and make money online.

And not just make money online with a little side hustle selling stuff on ebay (now there’s nothing wrong with that!), but what I’m talking about is people being able to replace their entire salaries or support their families or make more money than they ever have before.

If you’re here, that means YOU are ready to start an online business. You’re a coach, consultant, creator, you want to have an online course, you want to help people in some way, and you want to create your OWN job security and your OWN financial security and never see the inside of a cubicle ever again.

I’m going to give you, step by step, how to start an online business from scratch AND for free. These steps are based on what has worked the best with all of my clients in the past, and now that I’m coming out from behind the scenes and in front of the camera myself, this is actually exactly what I’m doing as well to grow my own online presence.

So you’re getting how to start an online business from BOTH sides on this channel as I share everything I’ve learned in the last decade being behind the scenes, and everything I’m going through as I implement it for myself, so make sure to subscribe because I’d love to have you along for the ride!

Step 1: Pick a Niche/Target Audience

The first thing you need to do if you want to start an online business is to pick a niche or a target audience. Your target audience is likely going to be a version of yourself in the past, OR it’s going to be the person you can help the most or the easiest, based on some area of knowledge or expertise or direct experience you have, or a combination of both of those things.

This could also just be a topic that you love, and you could honestly talk about forever, or maybe it’s something that people are always coming to you for advice about. And then I would recommend you widdle that down and get more specific. Here’s a few quick examples.

Maybe you’re a 35 year old guy and you recently had a health transformation, maybe you completely changed your diet and lost 30 pounds of fat and gained 10 pounds of muscle. Your target audience would be the version of YOU before this transformation. You’ll want to think about who that person was, how they felt, what they wanted, what their challenges were, what their obstacles were and so on.

Or let’s say people are always coming to you for financial advice, but you’ve always been really great with money, you’ve been saving since you were a kid, you’ve never really had any personal challenges OR majore transformation in this area, but you just love the topic. Since you don’t have a clear “before” version of yourself, even though I’m sure you do have personal stories or maybe mistakes you made or things you wish you did differently.

But in an example like this you could just pick a demographic that you want to work with. Maybe single moms, millennial women, 20 somethings just starting out in their careers, 40 somethings that haven’t started to save for retirement yet. You get the picture. You take a broad topic and get a bit more specific with exactly who you’re talking to. This is going to make it a lot easier when it comes to creating your content and growing your audience down the line.

That’s just a brief overview of how to pick a niche. If you want more from me on topic this definitely make sure to let me know in the comments below and I can do a deeper dive for you.

Step 2: Create a Lead Magnet

Once you’ve picked your niche, you’re going to create a lead magnet for your niche. A lead magnet is just what it sounds like, it’s going to act as a magnet and attract leads to you. So this is some kind of freebie that people will get in exchange for giving you their email address. So you are offering them a pdf, a workshop, an audio training, a video training, an ebook, a checklist, a template. The options are endless, and what you create will really just depend on what your target audience needs and wants and the resources you have available to you to create this lead magnet.

But just be thinking about what you could provide to your target audience that will help them in some way. If you’re a health coach, maybe it’s a shopping list or a meal plan. If you’re a trainer, maybe it’s a free workout. If you’re in the financial niche I just mentioned, maybe it’s The Top 5 Money Moves You Need to Make Today to Retire a Millionaire or something like that.

You can easily do this for free using Canva. They have a bunch of templates you can choose from so you don’t have to worry about the layout or design. If you wanted to do a video or workshop you can just record it with your phone and put it up on YouTube. It’s 100% free to do any of those things!

Step 3: Start Your Email List

Once you have your lead magnet ready, you want to start an email list and sign up with an email marketing provider. Since we’re doing this with no money, I recommend ConvertKit. You can learn more about why in this post!

Use this special link for a free 14-day trial of their Pro plan. You can try it out they don’t even ask for a credit card and at the end you’ll just automatically switch over to the free plan, which is free for up to 1000 subscribers.

You’ll also be able to create a landing page in ConvertKit. This will allow you to get started without even having a website. You can create a page on the ConvertKit Platform where people can sign up to get the Lead Magnet you’ve created and they’ll be added to your email list.

If you already have a website you could put an opt in for your lead magnet there as well, but since we’re talking how to do all of this for free, and you may not even have a website yet, and you’ve already signed up for your free email marketing platform, it just keeps it simple to set up your landing page in there as well for right now.

Step 4: Put Yourself Out There

Now comes the scary part – you just need to start putting yourself out there!

Start sharing your lead magnet, start sharing your expertise and your experience, start telling people about you and what you know and how you know it and how you can help them. That’s really what this part comes down to is just start helping people. Since we want to keep this free, social media is a great place to start. Just start creating a presence wherever your target audience hangs out the most, or whichever platform you are the most familiar with or comfortable using.

You can start doing in person workshops or events and have people sign up for your list when they attend. You can email your family and friends and personal contacts to let them know what you’re up to and see if they know anyone that would be interested in what you have to offer. You can start networking with other people who are doing the same thing as you are.

Just get yourself in front of as many people as you can so that you start to grow your audience and grow your community and build some awareness of who you are and what you’re doing.

Step 5: Start Offering Stuff to Your Growing Community

Now comes the fun part where you can then start offering your community something to buy. The best option here is probably going to be selling a service, like your coaching or some kind of consultation. A service liek this is going to be the easiest because you don’t really have to create anything, all you have to do is put together an offer. Like what’s included, how much it costs, all the details.

You can set up a stripe payment link, you can accept payments through Venmo business, or PayPal, or if you go with ConvertKit like I mentioned in step 3 of this video, you’ll be able to sell your services from there as well. You will have to pay fees on any payments you receive but there’s no cost upfront to you to set these things up!

Digital products are another option to start offering your audience, but can be a little more complicated. You’ll have to create the product and deliver it to buyers. But again, if you go with ConvertKit, you’ll be able to sell digital products through there.

And there you have it! How to start an online business with NO money, step by step.

And like I mentioned, these are the exact steps that I am taking myself as I move from behind the scenes to starting to build my own online presence as well.

Now I do want to quickly address the no money part of this, because while you CAN do this with no money, it’s going to be a lot easier and a lot faster if you are willing to invest in yourself and your business, and I’ll be doing a few money mindset videos for you soon to help with that so keep an eye out for those.

I really hope this was helpful, if so make sure subscribe to the channel because it really does help other people just like you to find these videos. Thank you so much for spending your time with me and I’ll see you in the next one.
