If you’re having trouble trying to decide what the best email marketing platform is for you – I got you!

There’s a LOT of options out there and it can be super overwhelming to commit to one when you’ve never done this before or you have zero subscribers.

So I’m going to tell you exactly what you need to consider when trying to find the best email marketing platform for you. Then I’ll share which one I think you should be using and why!

I’m not lying to you when I say I have been using these platforms for a decade. I’ve been working behind the scenes of online businesses since 2013, and I’ve used almost every platform there is. With my clients and in my own business, i currently and regularly use all of these platforms on any given day:

  • MailChimp
  • ActiveCampaign
  • Drip
  • ConvertKit
  • Aweber
  • Infusionsoft/Keap

So don’t worry, you’re in good hands here.

This also isn’t something I want you to get too caught up in. I wouldn’t spend more than a day or two thinking about this. My here is really to get you feeling comfortable enough to pick one so that you can move on with your life. It doesn’t have to be perfect!

The BEST Email Platform Will Do a Few Non-Negotiable Things

First, you need to be able to collect email addresses. We’ve all seen these and used these and put our name and email in and clicked submit. If you haven’t, i dunno what planet you’re living on.

After someone gives you their email address, you need to be able to send those people emails. So we don’t want emails just sitting in a spreadsheet somewhere. We want the emails we collect to be kept in the same place that we send emails from.

Next, you need to be able to segment your contacts. Now this isn’t going to be as important in the very beginning but as your list and your business grows, this becomes extremely important so it’s something that is good to get in the habit of doing from the very beginning.

Segmentation just means that you can categorize people based on different criteria. You can segment them based on things like where they came from – maybe through your website or from social media, or possibly an ad. You can segment them based on their engagement, so whether or not they opened an email or clicked a link. You can segment them based on their interests and kind of create different niches within your own business and in your own list. Or as you grow your business and your audience you may expand into new and different niches.

The last thing you need to be able to do is automation, and as much automation as you possibly can! This will allow you to send emails without you having to do any additional work. You just have to set it up once and never have to worry about it again. But there’s still a lot to consider and I’m gonna go through all those right now.

The Best Email Marketing Platform: Pricing

There is a pretty wide spectrum when it comes to the price of these platforms and they all have similar pricing structures where the more features you have, the more expensive it gets. The more contacts you have and the more emails you send, the more money you will pay. The good thing is that a lot of times these are on a sliding scale. This means you can choose the lowest plan and then just upgrade as you grow.

There are some extremely affordable email marketing platforms out there, but less money is going to mean less features, and sometimes that means more headaches! So you might paying less, but you can’t automate or segment your list. You’re paying less, but you can’t send as many emails as you need in order to connect to your audience.

I totally get it if price is a major factor for you, and I’m all about bootstrapping at the beginning. But there is going to come a time when you have to spend money on your business, and your email list is most definitely worth it.

Customer Service & Ease of Use

The next consideration is how easy the email marketing platform is to use, and that includes what the customer service is like. This is going to be pretty important especially if you’re not tech savvy or as comfortable with the tech side of things.

If you’re not interested in spending a lot of time tinkering around and learning the backend, it’s going to be important that whatever platform you choose has incredible customer service (or you buy a plan that includes some additional support.)

The good news is that almost all of these platforms will give you a little demo before you invest or they have a free trial. That way you can see what it looks like on the backend, get a feel for how complicated or simple it might be for you to use and be shown the basics of how to do things like look at your contacts, create a new email or a new email series, segment your list, build an automation and all those things i mentioned earlier.

In my experience, some email marketing platforms are just easier to use than others. Some are more intuitive to use than others. Some of them don’t make any sense to me and I have to use them because it’s what my client chooses to use. So this piece is going to depend on you as a person, your level of experience with technology, and other factors. So I really do recommend trying them out first and taking advantage of any free trial or demo that you can.

The Best Email Marketing Platform Offers Integrations (and Makes it Easy!)

When I say integrate, I’m talking about your email marketing platform easily communicating with or sending information to other softwares, apps, tools, or platforms you use. This is really important when it comes to automation.

As an example, how easily does the email platform integrate with your website? Maybe you use Squarespace. You want to make sure that if someone fills out a form on your squarespace website that their information can automatically be added into your email marketing platform.

Most email marketing platforms know how important this is for you business and put it front and center on their websites. You just need to make sure that whatever YOU use is available. A platform that has a longer list of integrations is generally going to be preferable than one with a shorter list, because you never know what you might need in the future!

Some of these email marketing platforms integrate more easily than others also. They may be some coding involved, or it might be a simple plugin or even a direct integration. You might need to use a third party provider, usually one called Zapier, to connect different platforms if there isn’t a direct integration available.

The Best Email Marketing Platform has the Features YOU Need

I’m a big proponent of not getting too far ahead of yourself in business, however I do want you to choose a platform that you can grow into, rather than something you’re going to grow out of! So it’s important to think about what you might need in the future because almost every email marketing platform is going to offer the basics. B

ut going for the bare bones in the beginning might put you in a situation where the email marketing platform no longer meets the needs of your business and you have to switch. It’s not impossible to switch, but it can be a pain.

So think about what you might need when you start to grow and get bigger. Do you plan to offer digital products? Do you want to have an online course? Do you already have a website or do you need the ability to create a hosted landing page where you can collect email addresses? Are you an analytics nerd and want a ton of analytics? Are you going to be doing sales calls and want to track sales pipelines?

I’m not trying to overwhelm you and don’t want you to get too bogged down thinking about any of these things, but again be thinking about something that you can grow into, rather than something you’re going to grow out of.

Do you LIKE the Branding/Marketing?

This one might sound silly, but you’re going to be signing into the backend of this email platform a lot, so you need to like it or you’re not going to use it! There’s also going to be a learning curve, so make it as easy as possible for yourself to use it and choose something that you’re excited to learn to use.

Just as an example, I personally started out using MailChimp many years ago, but I honestly could not stand the platform. I didn’t like the monkey. I didn’t like the cheeky branding. Using it didn’t feel intuitive to me. I feel like it’s a little clunky. I eventually made the switch to ConvertKit and it feels so much better to me! I feel lighter just thinking about it.

So stuff like that matters. If you’re still feeling overwhelmed with how to pick one at this point in the video, my honest advice is to just go to these websites and do a vibe check. Your gut is going to know which one is right for you and which ones you absolutely don’t want to use.

The BEST Email Marketing Platform in 2023

I just spilled the beans that my #1 choice for an email marketing platform right now is ConvertKit, and they actually recently added a free plan. For a long time Mailchimp was the “free” or most affordable one that i would have recommended to someone just getting started, but that is not true anymore.

Converkit feels so simple and intuitive for me to use, but it also still offers a one stop shop where you can create landing pages and sell your products and services all with the same platform, and it can really grow with you. It also has that tiered pricing i talked about, where you will gradually pay more as your list grows and you need more features.

As i’m filming this video now, you could have a free plan up to 1000 subscribers. Even the next plan up with more features is only $9 for up to 300 subscribers! If you want to sign up for the free plan or try out a trial, you can try it out here. I

know this was a lot but I really hope this was helpful. My best advice, just pick one and move on with your life! Don’t let this be something you get stuck on. It’s so much more important that you just start building your email list instead of trying to find the perfect platform.
