If you’re a coach or online entrepreneur, and you know that you need to get in front of more people…
And you know that video is the way to do that…
But you’re absolutely terrified to do it…
I’m going to share how I finally got myself to start a YouTube channel as an introvert and how I was able to overcome the fear of being seen – something I’d been thinking about for YEARS!
The Typical Advice to Start a YouTube Channel
So if you’re trying to find tips on starting a YouTube channel or starting an online business, or starting anything really, you’re going to hear things like:
Just do it…
Fake it until you make it…
Start before you’re ready…
Do it scared…
None of that hustle bro culture advice really works for me. First because that’s just not really me, and also because I was dealing with something much bigger than just “not feeling ready.”
In reality, I DID feel ready. I had the knowledge. I had the equipment. I had the spectacular natural lighting. I knew what to do, I just wasn’t doing it…and none of this advice was specifically about how to start a YouTube Channel as an introvert or addressed the fear of being seen.
Being an Introvert & The Fear of Being Seen
When I began to dig a little deeper into this, what I discovered was that I was dealing with this major inner conflict. I had a huge fear of being seen, but at the same time I also had this huge DESIRE to be seen.
And these things just cancelled each other out for a really long time, and I did nothing.
And if you’re an introvert or empath like me, this might make a lot of sense for you too because this fear of being seen is super common for introverts, empaths, and HSPs (highly sensitive people).
This fear creates a huge inner conflict for people like you and me because even though we’re introverted, and sensitive, we still love people and we have so much to give and we just want to help other people, but it’s so overwhelming to expose ourselves and put ourselves out there.
But let me back up a minute and talk more about what the fear of being seen actually means.
A lot of times this fear has many layers – it’s physical, it’s mental, and it’s emotional.
So there’s a superficial fear of being seen, other people seeing my face and seeing my body, and seeing my split ends and hearing my voice.
It’s allowing people to know how I think and feel about certain things.
And when we say “being seen” this also means being understood and accepted for who you really are, so the fear there is that if you do allow people to “see” you and get to know the real you, that they could reject you or they’ll judge you or won’t like you and this stirs up our most primal fears as humans.
And unfortunately, a lot of times this fear is labeled self-sabotage or maybe you think you’re just lazy or that you don’t have what it takes to run an online business or start a youtube channel, or whatever it is, and then you beat yourself up and it’s this vicious cycle that keeps you stuck and stops you from taking any action.
And just know that if this is you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you, and if you think about it, it actually makes perfect sense why you’re not putting yourself out there yet and getting in front of people.
Your brain is programmed to keep you safe, and that’s exactly what it’s doing.
So what do we do about it and finally overcome the fear of being seen?
Well for me, until the desire to be seen became bigger than the FEAR of being seen, I stayed stuck and did nothing.
So if you also want to overcome the fear of being seen, which if you’re still watching you probably do, here’s what worked for me. This was really about getting curious about two things:
First, where my fear of being seen comes from.
And second, why I want to make videos in the first place.
For me, exploring where the fear comes from was important because that’s just how I work. I’m not a do this, don’t do that kind of person.
I have a need for deeper understanding about why I do the things that I do.
And shocker, most of the time it all goes back to childhood.
It’s not that I just suck and I’m lazy and I’m not cut out for YouTube videos.
It’s that I’m the youngest of three, and I’m an introvert, and had experiences where I felt like what I have to say doesn’t matter, or where it actually wasn’t safe for me to draw attention to myself or I was punished for speaking my mind.
All of these things accumulate throughout our lives and create these fears and limiting beliefs, and for me, understanding where the fear comes from and giving the fear some context really helps me to have more compassion for myself.
The second part, the WHY I want to make videos is just as important, because the WHY is the only thing that can grow that desire so that it’s bigger than the fear.
So, instead of thinking about all the reasons why I was afraid of being seen, and worrying about what people would think about me, and what if nobody watches and what if people hate me, I needed to shift my focus to why I wanted to start making videos in the first place, and why even though it’s scary, deep down I have a desire, almost a longing to be seen and heard, knowing that putting myself in front of people is the very thing that will heal this wound and get rid of this fear.
I know what you’re thinking, that simply shifting focus from the fear to the desire sounds way too simple to actually work, but I promise you, that it works and not just for this but for pretty much anything in life because what you focus on expands.
For example, if all you think about is your debt, you’re going to have trouble getting out of debt. But if you shift the focus to how you can make more money, it’s going to be a lot easier.
So I know that what I have to say can help people. I know how much starting an online business can change a person’s life. I want people to have access to what I know from working with online entrepreneurs and coaches for over a decade so that they can be successful and earn more money and have more freedom and have time for their partners and their friends and their kids and on and on and on.
That is so much more important or powerful than any fear or discomfort I have about filming a video and putting it on the internet and the more I think about how much I could help people, the fear of being seen almost starts to feel a little silly and the desire finally took over and allowed me to take action.
And i don’t know if the fear will ever completely stop or go away, but i do know that I already wish I did this a long time ago!
So, I hope this helps if you want to overcome the fear of being seen or start a YouTube channel as an introvert.
